Mmmwhaah! Quilt Project Part 1 – Cutting!

KISS!

Hi Readers, Friends and Followers!

Are you ready to start following my Mmmwhaah! Quilt journey?

I’ll be blogging this project from beginning to end, from design to final binding stitch.  Feel free to make your own version if you want!

The finished size of this quilt is 47″ x 47″.

Let’s start the cutting!  But first, let’s look at the fundamental building block for this quilt.  This main block is a square block that has a triangle in two corners.  You can see how 4 of these blocks are rotated to create an O in the picture below…DSCF4988There are 4 O’s and 9 X’s in this quilt all set On-Point…Mmmwhaah

A.)  To make the X and O building blocks cut from an assortment of orange fabrics (104)  3″squares.  I like to cut a few extra to give me options, especially if I’m using several different fabrics.  I don’t necessarily like to have like fabrics butted up against each other.

The ruler below is an Omnigrid ruler that shows the finished size once sewn with a 1/4″ seam allowance (the cut square measures 3″ x 3″)…DSCF4841

B.) From an assortment of yellow and pink fabrics cut  4-1/2″ squares.  You’ll need 16 yellows and 36 pinks.  You’ll also need 8 additional yellow for the on-point setting squares, so go ahead and cut extras at this time.

The ruler I’m using for these 4-1/2″ squares is from The Bungalow Quilting & Yarn shop.  The finished size of the square will be 4″ (I know, different quilt companies mark their rulers differently, one will say the size of the finished sewn square and the other the size of the cut square, so it can get a little confusing when grabbing a template!  Just know that the finished size once sewn into this quilt will be 4″).  As a side note, Omnigrid also makes this same square template which happens to come in the same set as the 2-1/2″ square above.  It just so happened I grabbed Bungalow’s…

DSCF4842

You can certainly cut these squares using different rulers than mine, whatever works for you, I just happen to like being able to rotary cut around all 4 sides to the exact shape I want.

C.) Cut (4) 2″ squares in orange.  These will be corner stone blocks in the borders.

DSCF4978

D.) Cut the side setting triangles…  To do this, first cut a (6-7/8″) square.

DSCF4885

DSCF4886

Then sub-cut the square diagonal from corner to corner, first from left to right, then from right to left…DSCF4887

You will need 16 side setting triangles.  I cut out several more than needed to mix up my colors.

E.) Next are the Corner Setting Triangles.  You’ll need (4) corner setting triangles.  To make them cut (2) 6-5/8″ squares and then sub-cut in half from one corner to the opposite corner…DSCF4904DSCF4906

F.) Border strips.
Inner Border: Cut (2) 38-1/2″ x 2-1/2″ pink
Cut (2)   34 1/2″ x 2-1/2″ pink

Outer Border: Cut (5) 3″ x 44″(full width of fabric) strips from yellow.

G.) Binding.  Cut (5) 2-1/2″ x 44″ (full width of fabric) strips from color of your choosing.  These will be pieced together to make the 4 sides of the outer binding.

H.) Backing. Piece a backing from leftover blocks and/or 3 yards of fabric.

Ta Da!  Cutting is finished!

Stay tuned for Part 2 — Sewing the X and O blocks!

Happy Quilting, Happy Sewing!

Weight Loss Journey Quilt Project – Block #9– A Corner Turned, 15 Pounds!

DSCF4532Today was weigh in day, as it is every Saturday, and I had a big surprise this morning!  I’d lost 1.5 pounds for the week for a total of 15.2 pounds total since I began this journey!  You do not know how excited I was, I thought for sure they were lying!

You see, I’ve been only taking off .2 here, .4 there, just slowly, ever so slowly was this weight coming off.  Two weeks I even gained back a .2.  I was okay as long as I was still losing but today I so thought it was going to be just another .2 or .4. and then my intake attendant said congratulations!

Whoo Hoo!!! Happy Dance, Happy Dance!

I’ve been waiting 5 or 6 weeks to post this 15 pound milestone block!  Here it is…

Block Name: 4 Corners (Traditional Name), “A Corner Turned!” (My Adopted Name to this block) to signify that 15 pound milestone, heading on to the big 10% goal just a few more pounds away…
Finished Size: 6″
Difficulty Rating: Medium
Number of Pieces: 37
Method of Construction: Traditional, on point.
Weight Loss Progress: -15.2

Pattern to follow…

I need to go now and re-energize myself for the next few weeks.  I’d love to have another big drop again!

It is part of my goal to empty my crumb and string baskets this year!  I’ve made projects from crumb blocks before but this year is a concerted effort to make a big dent.DSCF4468

I’ve been thinking of putting a border on this top so I’ll let this sit a while before I make any decision on that.  I kinda like it the way it is, has a little bit of a modern vibe to it don’t you think?

More to come…

3 Dog Nights, Quilt Retreat and a Bad Case of the Sniffles

DSCF4323

Hi Friends,

It is good to be back among the living again.  This Spring weather threw me a doozy this week with a pretty bad chest cold and I’m just now feeling better, though still stuck with a lingering cough and phlegm issue which will hopefully be done in  a  few more days.

So back to what’s been happening around here!

We were in charge of Bella (center stage in the photo above) for a few days while friends of ours went out of town and boy was she just a little ball of energy!  Look at her!  Ready to go while poor Jamba is practically exhausted!  I think Jim had it the hardest because while Bella was here I ventured off to my long awaited first ever Quilt Retreat!!!DSCF4314

This is me after three days of power sewing and trying to stave off a nasty cold that was building.  I’m looking rather exhausted and pretty much after I’d pack up and was heading home it finally kicked in full force!

So that is why I’m backtracking my post here.  The retreat was wonderful.  I really enjoyed it and made lots of new quilting friends.DSCF4286I packed up the car with way too much stuff but as this was my first time I didn’t want to be without ANYTHING once I got there!DSCF4287

A funny thing right before I left, I was getting into the car to pull out of the driveway when I decided to do just ONE more walk through of the house to make sure I didn’t forget anything.  Would you believe I ALMOST left my clothing suitcase!!!  Pretty funny.  So excited about the quilting I nearly left without clothes!  LOL!

The retreat was at a Baptist Church Retreat center in Green Lake, Wisconsin.  They host hundreds of different retreats all year and from what I understand this was their first quilt retreat.  This was a beautiful place and we were there at a time that was not busy…still winter up there in the north woods!DSCF4293 DSCF4292 DSCF4291 DSCF4290 DSCF4294

So they were glad to have us!  The facilities were pretty awesome I must say.  All meals included too…which made it so easy!  Below are a few pictures of the dining hall…

DSCF4310 DSCF4308 DSCF4311

Fairly empty as you can see but plenty of room to accommodate a huge crowd!

Our room was roomy roomy! Though I was sorta tucked back in the corner with the garbage cans (see photo at top)…DSCF4300

I didn’t mind though because it allowed me to set up a card table and work on some free motion quilting and really take over a back corner!

The One Block Wonder class was being conducted in the front of the room and we all got to see the students progress through their project.  What a neat thing to see!

Below are the samples on display…

And the professionals working out a layout…

DSCF4301

One student finished on Sunday, pretty cool!  Can you tell I’m really in love with this?

DSCF4315

I signed up for this class in June!  Can’t wait to make one of these!

Anyhoo!  Just thought I’d drop a line in on the blog to let you all know what’s been going on.  I’m going to go suck down another 2 tablespoons of medicine, get a bite to eat and try to figure out what color we are going to paint the living room.  Jim has this on his agenda to get this room painted this weekend…sooooooo

I need to go think about that.  Cough, cough…

Be back soon!

Weight Loss Journey Quilt Project – Block #8 – “The Next 5 Pounds”

Hi Everyone!

We received some snow yesterday, just a few inches, and I think the plows were ready for it because when it was time to go to work the streets were clear!!  If there is one positive thing to say about living in Chicago (suburbs) this has to be it.  We have one of the BEST plow and street clearing systems on the planet!

Without further ado I’ve completed the next installment of my Weight Loss Journey Quilt.  This is block number 8 and I’ve called it “The Next 5 Pounds!”.DSCF3978

It’s official, I’ve lost 12 pounds so far, confirmed this morning at my regular meeting.  So!, it was time to think of another block to commemorate another 5 pound milestone.

I saw this block called ‘Combination Star’ (see link here) but when I was sewing it together I didn’t like the square in the middle…so I added in another Diamond In A Square block (with reversed coloring).  My goal here was to have a block that would represent 5 pounds…or 5 little markers to help me count my progress!  The little Diamonds In The Square blocks in the center and on each corner help me do just that!

If this looks amazingly similar to “January Thaw” you are right!  It dawned on me when I was drafting the pattern that the pieces were identical!  I guess I’m drawn to similar patterns! LOL!!!

Block Name: The Next 5 Pounds, Variation of a block called ‘Combination Star’
Finished Size: 6″
Difficulty Rating: Medium
Number of Pieces:
Method of Construction: Traditional Piecing, Rotary cutting, Template cutting
Weight Loss Progress: -12
Pattern is Here!

Happy Sewing!

Weight Loss Journey Quilt Project – Block #7 – “Must Love Chocolate!”

Happy Valentines Day!!!

It has been a week or so since I posted my last block in this Weight Loss series and all this time I have been thinking about doing a block that involved chocolate!!!  Isn’t chocolate something that we just crave on a diet?  I know for me it has been, even though I’m not normally a chocoholic so it must be something about the intense satisfaction of a smooth piece of chocolaty yumminess on the tongue that just hits the spot!

I saw this fabric at Hancock Fabrics about three weeks ago and had to get it!  I knew I wanted to make this little heart…

Here is “Must Love Chocolate!”

DSCF3908 DSCF3916

The block is a simple heart that I basted onto the background fabric and then covered the raw edge with a bias piece of fabric that I just zig-zagged in place.  The only thing I’d do different is put pink thread in the bobbin!  I guess I was being a little bit laze and left green in there so you can see little dots of green from the front.

As far as weight loss…I am down 10 pounds since I began!  Whoo Hoo!!  Last week I celebrated another 5 pound loss and a 5% milestone loss but I’ll wait until weigh in this week before I really truly believe it!  I’ll need to make two more celebration blocks but I don’t want to get ahead of myself…you know…chocolate and everything!

Block Name: Must Love Chocolate!, Original Design
Finished Size: 6″
Difficulty Rating: Medium
Number of Pieces: 3
Method of Construction: Machine Applique, Bias Trim Applique
Weight Loss Progress: -11

In other news…

The weather around here has been getting warmer and the snow is finally melting!  The sun has been coming up earlier as well and I love the bright sunrises we have this time a year.  Quite peaceful!

Enjoy your Valentines Day!

Weight Loss Journey Quilt Project – Block #6 – “Even Steven”

Hey Everyone!

Yesterday was weigh in day and just as I’d feared this day would come, I’m even for the week.

So in honor of being even my next block in this journey is “Even Steven” (faint reference to Seinfeld for those of you interested in the humor here).Even Steven Block

The block is rather a boring little number I have to admit, but it completely illustrates what weigh in day was like for me yesterday!

A straight yellow (panic) line in the middle of a glorious green field of weight loss!  The line is neither higher nor lower.

You should of seen me yesterday morning, in a panic trying to find my same clothes for weigh in.  I stepped on the scale at home and it was NOT what I wanted to see and NO WAY was I going to be OVER what I was last week.  Yes, I was in a panic to try and find the EXACT same clothing from the week prior.  I mean, what if I wore something heavier, I’d be risking complete disappointment on the scale at Weight Watchers!

Egads!  Fortunately, I guess it wasn’t a total failure, I was actually down .4 of a pound…whew!!!

I know there’s going to be a day when the number on the scale is going to go up for that week, I’m just not ready to face it yet!  Uggh!  Do any of you that have gone through this have this panic as well?

So here is the pattern for “Even Steven”: Even Steven Block

Block Name: Even Steven, Original Design
Finished Size: 6″
Difficulty Rating: Super, Super Easy
Number of Pieces: 3
Method of Construction: Traditional
Weight Loss Progress: -9.4

Weight Loss Journey Quilt Project – Block #5 – “January Thaw!”

Hi Friends!

DSCF3862

For the next block in this series I’ve chosen to do a block that will mark off the passing of time.  “January Thaw!” is a traditional block pattern that has just the appropriate name considering it is supposed to be 60 degrees today!!!

You can see my draft below…DSCF3863Friends, I want to share with you that I am not mathematically inclined.  I remember, just barely, Middle School and High School geometry but for the life of me it took me about an hour and a half to figure out how to determine the dimensions of the square within a square to come out 2″ finished for that middle square!!!!  You can see my notes at the bottom.

I decided the best way to test my math skills was to then to draw the pattern on the computer and use these for the templates.  Here is the file:  January Thaw Quilt Block Patterns

To make the 1/4 Square triangle blocks I used the method of matching two squares together and sewing along the diagonal 1/4 each side of center to make two 1/2 square triangles, then cutting those in two to make the 1/4 square units.

I did not take any ‘How To’ pictures on this block…I thought about it later but figured if you all wanted the pattern to do yourself you’d be able to figure it out from that…

Block Name: January Thaw, Traditional Design
Finished Size: 6″
Difficulty Rating: Medium
Number of Pieces: 29
Method of Construction: Traditional
Weight Loss Progress: -9

Weight Loss Journey Quilt Project – Block #3 – “Meetings”!

Hi Friends!

The next block on this journey is “Meetings”!

I made “Meetings” in the last couple of days after a long search to find a traditional pattern that would represent chairs or a group of people together but I did not have much luck…so “Meetings” was born out of necessity!

The block represents the chairs around a central motif counting the number of weeks in the program (for me it is 4 weeks!).

DSCF3793

Block Name: Meetings, Original Design
Finished Size: 6″
Difficulty Rating: Medium
Number of Pieces: 44
Method of Construction: Free Form Piecing
Weight Loss Progress: -7

I first designed an idea on paper and then instead of trying to figure out the size of the pieces I used these ‘Bonus Triangle’ blocks left over from the lap size ‘Star Snowball’ topper I recently finished…

DSCF3794

Using those blue and white half square triangles as the base I marked off a line on the back that was 1/2″ from the sewing line on the white part and sewed a piece of scrap fabric from the crumb bin.  The center is a leftover 4 Patch and then I added the triangles to each edge for a Square In a Square.

Happy Sewing Everyone!

New Year, Refining A New Quickie String Block Technique!

Happy New Year!!!

This morning I  decided one of my New Year Resolutions was to make a concerted effort to sew from my stash of fabrics and to completely EMPTY my string bin! DSCF3702

I like to switch over to quilting mode once the weather changes (as you might have guessed from my last post) and so I’ve pulled out all of my quilting projects as well as my scrap bins and string bins.  There are many ways to make string blocks and most of the techniques I know about use a foundation to help stabilize the block as you sew.  The foundations are either fabric or paper but after experimenting with the following technique a couple of years ago I decided to use my STRING BLOCKS IN A JIFFY technique this morning to help me with this goal!

Here’s how it works…

Pull out strings from the bin that are the same length.  Here, below, I like to use those strings that are selvage to selvage, you know, the ones that you get when you straighten up the edges before you start rotary cutting measured strips.  These are always wonky but they work just great for this technique.

DSCF3707 DSCF3708

Next I’ll take two strings and press them flat and sew two edges right sides together…DSCF3709 DSCF3710  DSCF3713

After this first pass I’ll then match up another set and sew those right sides together…DSCF3715

Continuing this technique until I’ve sewn all my strings together to measure about 18 inches or so in width…DSCF3716

I press this flat as best I can and then start cutting out my string squares…DSCF3717 DSCF3718 DSCF3719

For this example I’m working on 6″ string squares.  This was the size of the squares I finished with when I was sewing the 16 patch blocks combined with the hour glass blocks in my last post, so I’m maintaining a size consistency on these strings to see what I can come up with.  I don’t have any definite plans yet for these but I have some options now by cutting them this size!

I continue through the entire piece and after the first pass I have cut 8 blocks, several starter block triangles and a pile of starter crumbs..DSCF3720 DSCF3721 DSCF3722

I match up 4 of these larger triangles to give me 2 more 6″ blocks for a total of 10 BLOCKS!  All this in a matter of 30 minutes!  This was a great start to the New Year!DSCF3725

I hope your New Year kicks off to an equally fantastic start!

Happy New Year!
