Home Improvement – Wall Color Reveal!

Hi Friends, Family, Followers!

We’ve been busy putting the wall color up on the walls now!  Just to give you a refresher, we chose Benjamin Moore “Dill Weed” as our color and I had it formulated using the Ben series eggshell interior paint and primer.  This runs about $38 a gallon which isn’t the cheapest paint but is certainly NOT the most expensive series (that would be about $80 a gallon for the Aura series).

I bought 2 gallons which should be just about right for this size of room.  I’ve never used Benjamin Moore paint before so this will be a good chance to put my two cents in on a review.  Our local Ace Hardware carries Benjamin Moore, something they started a few years ago when the Benjamin Moore store closed down.  I do like to frequent our local Ace.  I like the friendly, low key feel to our little store (not to mention I don’t have to walk half a mile to get to the paint department!).

So here is the reveal…DSCF4439

Oooooh!  It’s GREEN!!!  The color in the can is a little lighter than it will be once dry.  Chloe showed up to get her paws in on the process…DSCF4444

She likes to climb ladders and will climb any ladder that you bring out, remind me to show you all the video sometime of her helping Jim put up the Christmas lights…just remind me ’cause I’ll forget to do it, it’s so cute…

Anyway…here’s how the walls are shaping up, these photos were taken in morning light…

We have to wait for the corner repair in the dining room to dry before we can finish so just a couple more days to go…then it’s the dreaded FLOOR decision!

Happy Painting!

Home Improvement — Painting the Ceiling, Choosing a Wall Color!

Hi Friends and Followers!

Today we started painting!  Aren’t you just dying to know what color we picked for the walls?  Can I just say right now that this was the longest I’ve ever taken to pick out a color!

I don’t know what it was, maybe because I wanted a green, and greens are notorious for being difficult to get right?  I know that’s true in oil/water/acrylic painting, it just takes a little yellow to get the green too yellow or just a little blue to get it too blue.  I’m not even going to mention brown or red mixed in…you get the idea.

DSCF4402

Probably no secret that the greens take up most of the space in the color chip sections of paint stores!

I picked out SEVERAL samples to put up and live with for awhile…DSCF4353

Painted on ALL the walls around the room…DSCF4403

Looked at them under natural light and under artificial light. During the day, during the night, when I woke up and when I went to bed.  Seriously, I’ve never obsessed about this so much before.  I even put the chairs, the rug, the painting and that curtain fabric I wanted all next to each other trying to get one of those colors to ‘speak’ to me…DSCF4361

The greens looked TOTALLY different on my wall then in the store but we ended up picking one.  It is Benjamin Moore Dill Weed.  It was between a Pittsburgh Paint color called Savory Root (all the way to the left second from bottom with the paint chip) and the Benjamin Moore Dill Weed (a ‘Happy’ green 3rd from the left in the bottom row, the darkest patch on the wall).DSCF4353

So Dill Weed!  Welcome to our Home!  You’ve been chosen from thousands of colors.  We hope your stay will be worthwhile!

Now.  Before we can get Dill Weed on the walls we need to paint the ceilings!  Uggh!  And we needed to come up with a plan to break up the room to paint in sections.

Here’s how to paint a ceiling…

1. Move furniture into middle of room and drape drop cloths/plastic over them.  Ceiling paint will splatter or drip and you don’t want that getting on everything.

DSCF4424

2. Fix any wall imperfections.  In our case we had several places that needed patching.DSCF4417

I used both spackling and joint compound in different areas around the room to fill in chips, nail holes, and cracks like the one above.DSCF4415 DSCF4405

Jim ran into a big repair in one of the corners in the dining room…DSCF4421

3. Then remove the faceplates from the outlets and any ceiling lights around the room…DSCF4394 DSCF4395 DSCF4392 DSCF4390

As well as any drapery hardware, you’ll most likely need both a flat head and a Phillips screw driver…DSCF4393 DSCF4396

4. Once the joint compound and/or spackling is dry, sand the area smooth…DSCF4422

5. If you are getting new windows (like our front window here) let your husband go to town on some demolition…(just don’t break the glass yet…)DSCF4411 DSCF4410 DSCF4412

So not necessary for painting the ceiling but what the heck!…

6. Now.  Decide which one of you is going to be the “Cutter Inner” and which one of you is going to be the “Roller Oner”.  In our case I was the “Cutter Inner”, that meant that I was in charge of ‘starting’ the job.

7.  My job was to get the paint on the walls first so I shook up the can of paint…DSCF4427

and stirred it until it was a smooth creamy texture.  I poured a small amount into a hand held painting container and with a chisel edged brush dipped only about 1/3rd the length of the bristles into the paint…DSCF4433

This is important!  You absolutely do not want to put too much paint on your brush!  Too much paint and the paint will just blob and drip uncontrollably all over the place.  Not what you want.  You want the paint to be on the wall, not on your floor or dripping down.  So with just this little amount I started ‘cutting in’…DSCF4431 DSCF4432 DSCF4429

We only taped the foyer area since the walls won’t be painted in that room, just the ceiling that is connected with the living room.  I forgot to mention taping.  You’ll want to do that in cases such as that.  If the walls are going to be painted you don’t need to worry about that.  Just cut in and don’t worry about the paint that gets on the walls, that will get covered up by the wall color.

8. Then it’s the “Roller Oner”‘s turn!  With the roller and an extension handle start applying the paint to the ceiling, keeping a wet edge…DSCF4428

In the photo above, you can see that we are breaking up the ceiling into two sections.  We are working on the left side of the peak first, going around the room counter clockwise.  Our strategy here is once this area is finished we can move the furniture over to the finished side and that will free up the other half of the room to then complete that side.

Let the ceiling paint dry!  The ceiling paint needs to be completely dry before painting the wall color or else you’ll get white streaks near the intersections!

Relax, have lunch, or in my case, have a beer and go toss the ball with the dogs…

As for the “Roller Oner” , wait for him to finish and snap a photo!DSCF4436

Next up is the walls!!!

Whoo Hoo!

Happy Painting!

I’ve Been Invited To Exhibit a Painting!

Hey Readers!

So you all know I’ve painted, oh what was I on when I last counted, nine?   Anyway.  After the Plein Air competition I entered I was asked to exhibit this coming January.

Here’s my painting.  Again…don’t laugh too much.  This is only my 9th painting and this picture of it is just okay.  Looks much better in the dim light of my living room…LOL!

This is my first Plein Air Painting competition and my 9th oil painting, don’t laugh people!

When I received the invite they sent me a link to an article in Plein Air Magazine, so you all can see the winners.  All three of the winners are professional artitsts.  Eddie Corkery is, to me anyway, a master.  His painting really was just full of light and had a quite peaceful subject (mowing the lawn with the dog in the yard).  Although I have no idea when he painted because the entire month was as drab and dreary as can be!!!  But I guess when you do this for a living you can actually wait for the sun to come out!

Here’s the link!

I actually am allowed to exhibit up to three paintings but I sadly haven’t been out to paint!!  Oh, I wonder how I can get out there in the cold to do another?!

Anyway….enjoy!

Paintings #7 and #8

Hi Friends!

I know it has been several days since I’ve posted anything.  I have been working on my paintings and once I get started I have to keep going until they get finished.

This week saw a finish on this painting of Einstein and Jim: There is a slight glare when I took this photo, probably from the flash and the fact that the painting was still wet.  Jim said he looks like he has lipstick, which I tried to tone down a bit and Einstein’s eye isn’t soo scary in real life.

The technique used on this painting is the one where you trace off the outline of the silhouette in a photograph, paint it in Mars Violet, let that dry and then paint it again in color.  I’m sorry I don’t have any photos of the process but it was one our instructor shared with us and so this was my first attempt at this new technique.  I will have to say that it was a lot easier to paint the colors with the under painting established.

Speaking of Einstein, in case you all want an update, we received a letter from CCI that Einstein will be rotating through Team Training come May 7th-18th.  We’ll know about May 9th or 10th if he’s made a match and then we’ll travel to Ohio for the graduation on May 18th.  We are really proud of that dog and we hope everything will work out!

I still want to paint another painting of just Einstein and somehow frame it with his matriculation ribbon but I’ll wait to see what happens…

The other painting I finished is this one of a farm scene:

I don’t know why it looks so dark, it’s not, I’ll have to figure out how to lighten it up a bit so you can see it.  Maybe because I took it this morning indoors and it is not very bright outside?  Anyhoo, I’ll update the photo once I get a better shot.  It is still wet so it might be a few days…

This painting is actually painted on a pre-stretched canvas.  I’ve been painting on canvas panels so far and wanted to try something else.  The subject matter is a farm scene which I guess I’ll have to let you know what that is all about.

Jim cut out a couple of advertisements in the paper about two weeks ago for me.  One was a call for images (paintings, photography) from the Lake County Heritage Farm Foundation.  Some of the past work looks really good so I probably won’t make it into the show but I thought I would try.  So this first painting is my first attempt to see what I can come up with.

The other aspect of this show is to paint a farm in Lake County, Illinois, which the border is just about 2 miles from our house.  Last Sunday I drove and drove and drove all over trying to find a farm in Lake County!  Not very easy!!!! And as soon as I found one I stopped, made some reference photos and then went in search of some more.  I found 3 that I thought might be good but I only saw 2 horses (way off in the distance) and unfortunately, on this one farm I painted above, a For Sale sign on the corner.  But getting back to why I painted this farm.  It was in Lake County and there is a special segment of the show just for Lake County images.  I figure that’s my best chance…so there you are…

Oh, and the other article that Jim cut out for me?  It was for a Plein Air Painting competition which starts THIS Friday!  Yikes!!!  I entered so what the heck!

Talk soon!

Collection The Artist – Painting #2

I’ve always wanted to say that,  “Collection The Artist” that is.

Hi Everyone!  Well I have been getting all of my equipment together this week for my upcoming oil painting class and with all that fresh paint, canvases and brushes I just couldn’t wait to play!!!!

I’m sorry that I am showing you painting #2 instead of #1.  My battery on my camera died (or maybe #1 was just so bad it got shut-eye) and only let me take one photo before it shut down (laugh! haar!).  So here is painting #2.  It is from a photograph I took of a swan that was swimming around a winery when we were in Oregon a few years back.  I’m sure you’ll be able to tell it’s a swan, not so much the winery part…As I look at the photo I can see all kinds of problems going on with this.  That’s why I need a class!  I could go on with a self critique but I’ll try not to bore you.

Til the battery gets charged!
