Paintings #3 and #4

I had my painting class on Tuesday this week.  I am one of only 3 students that are painting in oil, the rest are painting in acrylic.  Our instructor highly recommends acrylic if  we really want to learn how to be proficient at painting.

That sounded a little odd to me.  He said that oil is much more forgiving because you can ‘erase’ with paint whereas acrylic is a lot more difficult to control because is dries rather fast.

I told him I had been a student of watercolor and I could appreciate that but now it was time to have some forgiveness if he knew what I meant.

So….don’t laugh you all.  For these next two paintings I went out to a local forest preserve park that is close to our home and did a few sketches.  One of these paintings was done from life ‘en plein air’ and the other was painted in class and finished up here at home.

I have to say I learned a lot from these paintings, mostly because I don’t yet know what I’m doing.  It is a little frustrating but I’ll venture on!

DSCF1069Like I mentioned earlier, this was done from life so I think my colors might be a bit more realistic.  I was having the darndest time trying to figure out how to paint dried grasses and vegetation!  This is so much harder than I thought it would be.

The first session on this painting was in class and I started it very similar to the first study, but I had to make up some of the colors.  When I got home I really thought it was too light and started adding deeper and darker color and thicker paint.

Now that I’ve had a chance to do some research at the library and go to the store and pick up a book on landscape oil painting I see two things I did right off the bat that are inaccurate (and if you actually go outside and squint this will be true too).  The sky should have been a darker shade of blue towards the top, instead of near the horizon like mine and that band of trees in the background should have been much much lighter in color, not dark like I did.  I tried to correct it but it still is really, really dark.  The problem with having something really strong and dark in the distance is that your eye goes to that point, in which case that really wasn’t my goal.  Oops.  Paint and Learn.

Still figuring out how to do reflections in the water.

And those grasses?  Aaagh!

I found this Winslow Homer painting (Veteran In A New Field)  in a book at the library and if only I could make my grasses look like his wheat!!!!  How’d he do that?!!!!image Venturing forward…

Happy St. Patty’s day to you all!  I’m off to go watch our parade through town..

Collection The Artist – Painting #2

I’ve always wanted to say that,  “Collection The Artist” that is.

Hi Everyone!  Well I have been getting all of my equipment together this week for my upcoming oil painting class and with all that fresh paint, canvases and brushes I just couldn’t wait to play!!!!

I’m sorry that I am showing you painting #2 instead of #1.  My battery on my camera died (or maybe #1 was just so bad it got shut-eye) and only let me take one photo before it shut down (laugh! haar!).  So here is painting #2.  It is from a photograph I took of a swan that was swimming around a winery when we were in Oregon a few years back.  I’m sure you’ll be able to tell it’s a swan, not so much the winery part…As I look at the photo I can see all kinds of problems going on with this.  That’s why I need a class!  I could go on with a self critique but I’ll try not to bore you.

Til the battery gets charged!

My New Adventure in Oil Painting

Hi Friends and Readers,

The Mona Lisa.

It is sewing diversion time for me!  I have loved drawing and painting all my life (not that great at it but love it non-the-less) so last week I signed myself up for an Oil Painting class at the local community college.

I think it has been about 10 years since I last took an art class there and I’ve been eager to practice my drawing and painting skills again!

Oil painting has this mystique about it that I find intriguing.  I can never get enough of seeing a painting from far away looking exactly perfect and when you get closer the paint just looks like little bits of color.

The fun thing for all of you is that YOU are going to get to see all of my completely clumsy oil art as I re-train my brain as well as the eye to hand ( brush) coordination!  It is sure to be a fun time.  It will be interesting to see if after 20 years of various artistic experience, if oil painting will come naturally to me or if it will be a struggle!

Let’s hope it is natural!

The class starts Tuesday night.  Look for my posted work right here next week!

Braid-A-Long 2012 Day 4 – Finishing The Rug!

Hi Everyone!

As promised I told you I’d be back later in the week to wrap this Braid-A-Long up and show you the finish.

Just remember, you can join the  Sewingforlife! Project Group  anytime to share with everyone your own braided rug.  I’d love to see your work!

Finishing the braid is rather simple.  All you need to do is weave in the three strands of yarn  and then sew back and forth with your zig-zag stitch until you’ve locked in these loose ends.DSCF0927DSCF0931 DSCF0933

Trim the yarns and thread and YOU ARE FINISHED!!!

Stand back and admire your new rug!  Congrats!DSCF0944

Till later!
